Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Communications, Sam Nartey George, has given a solid assurance to Ghanaians of a resolve to the high priced purchase of data bundles and better network performance of all network service providers in Ghana.

The Minister made this vow in a tagged post as a clarification on points outlined by a Ghanaian netizen who expressed worry about the approach the Ghanaian government has employed being the ultimatum recently issued by the Minister of Communication to all network operators to significantly improve service quality or face regulatory sanctions. He argues that government’s demand is not feasible in light of several challenges such as government delays in licensing and additional terrain for network operations, high costs, and bad policies

George, in a tagged post commending the analysis of the user, revealed that the ministry has set out a plan to solve underlying issues other the ones outlined – strongly blaming the previous administration for giving MTN as the network with Significant Market Power(SMP) – a higher dominance and more attention which in hand ruined better performance for all other networks. “The previous administration applied the SMP tool as a single sided measure and failed to enforce commensurate investment by the smaller operators. This led to strengthening the SMP and burdening the Ghanaian customer.”

He noted that the Ministry of Communication seeks to spread its supervisory efforts to all other networks by the establishment of certain regulatory reforms to ensure there are investments going into all of them for better performance. “As I have indicated, a number of regulatory reforms are underway and we would be applying and announcing same over the course of the rest of the year. I’m confident that working together with civil society and we’ll meaning Ghanaians, we would fix the mess of the past 8 years. Cheers. ”

Very insightful piece from my friend @lordcudjoe. However, there may be a few areas where I digress and would welcome a policy conversation soon.

The regulatory reforms underway at the Ministry and Regulator deal extensively with network investments and not just spectrum… https://t.co/4ZqOVU5dqP
