Latvia was given a historic position and with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bahrain, Colombia and Libera through votes made by a total of 188 United Nations Member States as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Reports indicate that the votes required only one round of balloting with the representative of the five nations set to be serving on the UN body responsible for maintaining international peace and security in January 2026 and continue their work through the end of 2027.

Latvia from the Eastern European received 178 votes earning a spot by a slim chance with the other countries that were set into the African, Asia-Pacific group. Bahrain received 186 votes, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) garnered 183 votes, and Liberia received 181 votes and Colombia received 180 votes.

Latvia, takes a seat on the Council for the first time in its history, as all the elected countries have previously served Colombia seven times, the DRC twice, and Bahrain and Liberia once each.
