The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, says government will allocate resources to complete the runway extension at the Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi by the end of this year.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ breakfast meeting organized by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Mr. Nikpe emphasized the project’s importance in Ghana’s bid to become a West African aviation hub.

“The runway is currently 1,881 meters. We’re extending it to 2,320 meters so medium-body international aircraft can land safely in Kumasi. We’re hopeful the work will be done and operational by year’s end.”

The extended runway will allow more direct international flights into Kumasi, opening the city to increased global traffic and business.

At the same event, the acting Director-General of the GCAA, Rev. Stephen Wilfred Arthur, revealed progress on upgrades at the Kotoka International Airport.

“We’re constructing a modern air traffic control tower at KIA. It’s already 100% complete on infrastructure and over 80% complete overall. This will improve radar coverage, communication, and safety.”

Rev. Arthur added that GCAA is implementing advanced passenger information and passenger name record systems to strengthen airport security.

He explained the new system will collect and analyze passenger data in real time, enabling the Ghana Immigration Service to identify travelers even before they land.

“This aligns with global aviation security standards and helps Ghana tackle cross-border crime more effectively.”

GCAA says it’s working closely with government and international partners to finish all projects on schedule.
