UN General Assembly votes overwhelmingly in favour of immediate ceasefire in Gaza

The United Nations General Assembly has delivered a strong message, voting overwhelmingly in favour of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas, and full access for humanitarian aid to reach over 2 million Palestinians in urgent need.

This call comes as Gaza continues to reel from more than 20 months of relentless conflict driven by Israel’s military campaign.

Out of the 193 UN member states, 149 backed the resolution, which was drafted by Spain. The text also firmly condemns the use of starvation as a weapon of war. Twelve countries voted against it, while 19 abstained.

Speaking after the vote, Palestinian Ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, expressed gratitude to the nations rallying behind the call for peace. “We thank all those who are mobilized to end this horrific tragedy — governments and peoples from across the globe who are standing up for humanity and the defense of the entire nation of Palestine,” he said.
