The Ghana Olympic Committee on Saturday, June 22, 2025, joined the global world to celebrate International Olympic Day.

June 22, the day set aside to honor the birth of the Olympic Movement and to promote sports for all regardless of gender and race was birthed in 1948 and has been celebrated yearly for the past 77 years.

To mark this year’s celebration, the Ghana Olympic Committee organized a unity walk with both the sporting community and non-sporting enthusiasts to showcase the power of sports and its influence.

The unity walk began at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, where Federations Heads, athletes, coaches, students, and supporters walked through the Osu Castle and into central Accra while cheering to the sounds from a brass band before arriving at the Accra Sports Stadium for aerobics and other activities planned to celebrate the day.

GOC president, Richard Akpokavie told reporters that he was very impressed with the turnout of the Olympic Day celebrations and hoped to extend it to other regions so that they can also experience the day.

“The turnout has been very good and we intend to make the other regions also experience the International Olympic Day celebrations. We are not going to celebrate it in Accra always, we will take it out there for all to enjoy,” GOC president, Richard Akpokavie said.

He added that they are going to form a committee that will come up with a plan on how best to make the celebrations a nationwide festival.

“We’re putting a few structures in place; forming our committees and laying out a plan so we can start working effectively.”

The 2025 Olympic Day celebrations was also graced by Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the Director General of the National Sports Authority and his Deputies.
