A new survey conducted by Africa Policy Lens has revealed the dynamics in the race for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 Flagbearer.

The data places former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia firmly in the lead among NPP supporters, while Kennedy Agyapong enjoys popularity across party lines.

According to the report, 70.6% of NPP respondents said they would back Dr. Bawumia as their preferred flagbearer. Agyapong, though trailing, garnered 21.4% of the NPP vote cementing his position as a noteworthy contender.

However response from supporters of the rival National Democratic Congress (NDC) favor Kennedy Agyapong.

While not directly involved in the NPP’s selection, 48.4% of NDC respondents said they would prefer Kennedy Agyapong as the NPP’s candidate compared to 35.3% who favored Bawumia. The rest remained undecided.

Survey data highlights Bawumia’s strong performance across 12 of Ghana’s 16 regions, which analysts say boosts his image as a candidate with cross-regional and national appeal.

His background from northern Ghana is also seen as strategically important, potentially helping the NPP make gains in areas traditionally dominated by the NDC.

Supporters of Bawumia view him as the party’s strongest shot at regaining power in 2028, citing his experience, vision, and perceived ability to unify the nation.

Meanwhile, Agyapong’s appeal to voters outside the NPP may point to a broader, unconventional base of support.

As both men position themselves for the road ahead, this survey offers a glimpse into how party loyalty, cross-party interest, and regional identity could shape the political narrative in the years to come.
