The first day of NBPA x UM6P’s One Court Africa gathering brought players, mentors, and changemakers together in a deeply human and reflective space. This wasn’t just about development or sport; it was about legacy. And specifically, about who shapes it, why they do it, and how it lasts.

Themed “Legacy, Leadership and the Power of Purpose,” the focus of the day rested on the philanthropic blueprints laid down by African greats such as Dikembe Mutombo and Bismack Biyombo, both of whom have taken their NBA careers as a launching pad for long-term social impact.

In candid conversations, players explored their emotional connection to Africa, the influence of their upbringing, and the duty they feel to give back, not just in name, but in structure, action, and ownership.

They discussed the weight of expectation, the pride of heritage, and the moral obligation to use their platforms not just for charity, but for transformation. It was not about visibility; it was about values.

What stood out most wasn’t the celebration of big donations or brand deals. It was a
serious, grounded focus on sustainability. On doing things the right way. Mutombo’s story wasn’t told through nostalgia, but through challenge: Who will carry this work forward? Who will build something that outlives them?

The event’s atmosphere blended gravitas with grace, facilitated through storytelling circles, panel discussions, and moments of collective learning.
Day One concluded with a quiet sense of conviction — that something deeply foundational had been sparked. As participants left the day’s sessions, it was clear they weren’t just inspired — they were called.
