The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has filed an appeal against a ruling by the High Court in Kumasi that acquitted Alexander Kwabena Sarfo-Kantanka, former President Akufo-Addo’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Juaben in the Ashanti Region.

Mr. Sarfo-Kantanka was captured in a widely circulated video demanding the return of monies allegedly paid to assembly members after they rejected his nomination.

He was subsequently charged with 26 counts of corruption, including allegations of attempting to bribe members of the Juaben Municipal Assembly to secure approval.

The trial, which experienced delays due to the transfer of the presiding judge in November 2024, concluded with a judgment on May 26, 2025.

In its ruling, the Court held that the video evidence did not conclusively establish a link between Sarfo-Kantanka and the alleged bribery.

Dissatisfied with the ruling, the OSP argues that the judgment failed to reflect the weight of the evidence presented and that the judge erred in both legal reasoning and factual interpretation.

The Special Prosecutor maintains that justice was not served and is seeking a reversal of the acquittal through the appellate courts.
