Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu has announced plans to present the Ghana Scholarship Authority bill to parliament to be passed within the next weeks.

According to the minister, the bill will addresss issues of nepotism, cronyism associated with the awarding of scholarships.

“I will be introducing in parliament within the next few week the Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill on behalf of Excellency Mahama as he pledged to the Ghanaian people to deal with nepotism, cronyism with the awarding of scholarships”.

Under the soon-to-be-introduced Ghana Scholarship Authority Bill, the scholarships will be fully funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and managed by a newly established, independent authority.

Speaking at the West African Education Certificate Distinction Awards in Accra, he revealed that, President Mahama is set to fully sponsor 10 top students who excel in the West African Senior Certificate Examination (WASSCE) every year beginning from this year.

The initiative, originally proposed for only three students, has now been expanded to include ten recipients in each scholarship cycle, following the directive of President Mahama.

“I have the pleasure of President John Dramani Mahama to announce today that these award winners of three the President has asked me to expand it to ten awardees,”.

Additionally, WAEC will retain exclusive authority in selecting the top-performing students based strictly on academic performance, ensuring full transparency and integrity in the process.

“Without any interference from WAEC’s determination of these best students, ten of them will receive the President’s pleasure of continuous support,” he emphasized.
