Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has urged Ghana to prioritise drug abuse prevention. She made the call while addressing this year’s World Drug Day event at the Accra International Conference Centre.
She said the country has made notable progress in tackling traditional narcotics, but the growing threat of synthetic opioids requires swift and adaptive action.
“The evidence is clear — invest in prevention. We must rise to the occasion and put in place practical, effective measures to curb the menace.”
The Vice President applauded the Narcotics Control Commission for stepping up its efforts. She pointed to recent major operations that intercepted large quantities of illegal substances and dismantled criminal drug networks across the country.
She called on stakeholders to equip the Commission with the right tools, training, and resources to stay ahead of emerging threats in drug trafficking.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang also called for a compassionate approach to treatment. She welcomed the establishment of the Substance Use Disorder Rehabilitation Fund and urged its full implementation to support recovery efforts.
