Takoradi at risk of building collapses-Engineer warn

Following a string of building collapses in Cape Coast, Road and Building Consultant Ing. Abdulai Mahama has issued a stark warning saying Takoradi could be next if urgent structural integrity assessments are not done on houses.

Speaking on in an interview, Ing. Mahama called on the government to proactively inspect and reinforce weak buildings in the Western Region, particularly in Takoradi’s coastal zones.

“What we have in the Western Region, the government should now be proactive, especially with what has happened in Cape Coast. The Mayor of Takoradi and the Minister should start looking at places where there are too many poor buildings and start to do the structural integrity analysis in Takoradi as well.”

His comments come in the wake of multiple building collapses in Cape Coast, that have claimed lives and heightened public anxiety over construction standards and enforcement. Ing. Mahama warned that even minor earth tremors common in parts of southern Ghana could trigger catastrophic failures in structurally compromised buildings.

“Some buildings across southern Ghana are located along active fault lines,” he explained, citing geological studies that trace fault lines from Accra through Burma Camp and Peduase Lodge, stretching as far as Cameroon.

He urged the government to allocate a dedicated lump sum from the national budget to fund structural audits and retrofitting efforts in high-risk areas.

“Without early intervention, lives could be lost in future collapses,” he cautioned.
