Ghanaians Urged to End Indiscriminate Burning and Embrace Recycling

Country Manager of the Clean Air Fund, Mr. Desmond Appiah

The Country Manager of the Clean Air Fund, Mr. Desmond Appiah, has called on Ghanaians to stop the indiscriminate burning of waste and to promote a circular economy by recycling plastic waste.

Speaking to happyghana.com during the Clean Air Awareness Campaign held on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle-Odawna station in Accra, Mr. Appiah stressed that burning refuse in communities poses serious health risks, particularly respiratory diseases.

He emphasized that if citizens made the effort to separate plastic waste from other household refuse, waste management companies such as Zoomlion would find it easier to collect and recycle those materials.

This, he noted, would help reduce pollution and preserve the environment, instead of the harmful practice of burning garbage indiscriminately.

Mr. Appiah further reminded the public that there are existing by-laws across various metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies that prohibit the burning of waste.

He therefore urged local authorities to strictly enforce these laws and impose sanctions on offenders who continue to disregard proper waste disposal practices.
