Ghana Secures $30 Million Grant from China for Construction of Modern Aflao Market

The Government of Ghana has secured a $30 million grant from the Government of the People’s Republic of China for the construction of a modern market in Aflao.

The funding forms part of efforts to fulfill a campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama during the 2024 electioneering period.

The grant agreement was signed on July 7, 2025, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in Accra.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, signed on behalf of the Government of Ghana, while the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa, signed for the Chinese Government.

According to post on the official Facebook page of the Foreign Affairs Minister, the initiative follows the direct instructions of President Mahama and reflects the administration’s commitment to delivering on development pledges, particularly in economically strategic regions.

Mr. Ablakwa noted that a similar grant from China was previously used to construct the acclaimed Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast during the Mills/Mahama administration.

He explained that the new Aflao market is expected to significantly boost economic activity, facilitate trade between Ho and Lomé, and enhance livelihoods in the Volta Region, which serves as a key West African trading corridor.

The project is part of broader efforts by the Mahama-led government to strengthen regional integration and modernize market infrastructure across the country.
