Ablekuma North Rerun: NPP Grassroots campaign Boycott

As electoral tension heightens ahead of Friday’s parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North, friends of
New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Akua Afriyie say they are pressing ahead with campaign efforts even as the party’s national leadership maintains its boycott of the process.

Abubakar Braimah, NPP Organizer for Ablekuma North, told reporters that the constituency’s base refuses to withdraw from the election, citing the continued presence of their candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, on the ballot.

“The party says it won’t contest, but the supporters do not agree. Our people are saying they are not going to listen. This morning, the Electoral Commission gave us the poll notes and she’s there. So why should they sit down and allow the other party to do whatever they want?”

The Electoral Commission ordered the rerun in 19 polling stations after disruptions and verification issues affected the collation process during the December 2024 elections.

Despite securing leads in 78 polling stations, the NPP leadership insists that the rerun undermines judicial directives and electoral fairness.

However, party loyalists in the constituency are determined to prove their strength at the ballot box.

“They are going out to work and make sure that the people vote. They are going to prove the NDC wrong, that even if the party has stepped back, the supporters will rise up,” Braimah added.

Afriyie herself has declared her intention to contest, calling the rerun a moment of vindication.
