Ablekuma North Rerun: chaos and violence disrupt parliamentary rerun

What was meant to be a decisive moment in Ghana’s democratic process took a violent turn on Friday, July 11, as chaos erupted at St. Peter’s polling centre during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.

According to eyewitnesses and media reports, a group of unidentified macho men stormed the polling centre in a coordinated invasion, sending voters and officials into a panic.

Their violent actions brought voting to an abrupt halt and triggered a swift but tense intervention from security personnel.

The New Patriotic Party’s candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, was severely assaulted during the attack.

Also, Former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson was also reportedly assaulted by the intruders while attempting to assist at the centre.

The rerun was organized by Ghana’s Electoral Commission to settle disputes stemming from the contested 2024 general elections.

Although the NPP officially boycotted the rerun, Nana Akua Afriyie chose to contest independently, defying party directives, a decision that placed her squarely in the spotlight as tensions simmered.
