Michael Kwadwo Peprah, President of the Concerned Small Scale Miners Association, has denied claims that he obstructed a police anti-galamsey taskforce operation in the Desiri Forest in the Ahafo Ano North District.
The controversy erupted after a viral video showed Mr. Peprah in handcuffs, sparking reports that he had intervened to protect illegal miners.
According to Peprah, his intention was simply to verify the affiliation of the taskforce involved in the operation and not to interfere.
“I only approached the officers to inquire about their operation, as advised by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources during a previous meeting with miners,” he explained.
He dismissed claims by some community members who reportedly identified him as backing the illegal activity, stating that his visit to the area was for political engagement. “I was there for the 2024 NDC campaign not as a miner,” he clarified.
Despite his arrest, Peprah was later released on bail and maintains that he did not obstruct the work of the taskforce.
