The 2024 NPP parliamentary candidate in the Ablekuma North Constituency, Nana Akua Afriyie, has issued an apology to the party’s leadership.

Afriyie admitted to defying a party directive not to take part in the July 11 rerun, which the NPP had officially boycotted. Speaking to journalists on Monday, she confirmed that she apologised during an emergency National Executive Committee meeting held at the Alisa Hotel.

She acknowledged the party’s position, saying, “NEC’s decision was right and apt. I won in 2024, but there was a clear attempt to subvert the will of the people. I still believe that but for the chaos, I would have emerged victorious.”

Afriyie insisted she acted not out of disrespect but in defence of the party’s core values.

“I defied the directive because I wanted to uphold our principles—accountability, probity, and freedom,” she said. “Despite the outcome of this rerun, I believe justice will prevail, and we will win back the seat.”

The NPP boycotted the rerun after an Accra High Court dismissed its injunction request just two days before the vote. The party maintained that the election was illegal and violated court processes.

Despite this, Akua Afriyie broke ranks and entered the race less than 24 hours before voting began, citing her duty to protect her 2024 victory.

At the end of the polls, the Electoral Commission declared Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress winner with 34,090 votes. Akua Afriyie followed closely with 33,800 votes.
