The Eastern Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dismissed circulating rumours that Mrs. Mavis Kumi, widow of the late Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, intends to contest the vacant parliamentary seat.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, July 15, and signed by Regional Chairman Jeff Konadu Addo, the Party described the claims and accompanying campaign flyers as “false, misleading, and deserving of the utmost contempt.”

The statement clarified that the Party has maintained close contact with Mrs. Kumi and her family since the MP’s passing, and she has “unequivocally communicated that she has no interest in contesting the seat or participating in active politics at this time.”

Her current focus, the Party emphasized, is to mourn her husband “with dignity and in peace.”

The NPP urged its members, supporters, and the general public to disregard the unauthorised flyer and refrain from spreading misinformation, especially during a period of mourning.

“Misinformation of this nature only adds pain to an already grieving family… such conduct must be strongly discouraged,” the statement noted.

The late MP was remembered as a “committed patriot and loyal servant” of both the NPP and the people of Akwatia.

The Party called on well-wishers to honour his legacy with truth and dignity, and to uphold the values of unity, decorum, and integrity that define the NPP.

The Eastern Regional leadership called on Ghanaians to continuously pray and support the bereaved family, and urged the party to focus on celebrating Ernest Kumi’s contributions rather than engaging in political speculation.
