The Medical Superintendent of Sunyani Municipal Hospital, Dr. Michael Arthur has emphasized the need for immediate infrastructure expansion to enhance the facility’s capacity to provide quality healthcare services.

Dr. Arthur, said the hospital, built almost a 100 years ago, faces infrastructure deficit, particularly in the emergency ward, which severely hampers its ability to deliver optimal care.

The Medical Superintendent made the request in an interview with the media during the unannounced visit of the Sunyani East MCE, Hon Vincent Antwi Agyei to the hospital, where he engaged with staff and patients to gain first-hand insight into the challenges faced by the facility and identify areas for improvement.

Dr. Michael Arthur told the media that given the hospital’s high patient load, with an average of 100 patients daily, there is the need for expansion.

He noted that while the existing hospital block is still in use and can not be demolished, he advocated for the construction of a new block before demolishing the old one to ensure uninterrupted service.

According to him, land is available for the expansion project, which would enable the hospital to be upgraded to a modern facility.
Dr. Arthur also pointed out pressing issues, such as roof leakages during rainfall, and urged the assembly to address these challenges in the meantime while planning for the larger expansion project.

Beyond the infrastructure concerns, the Medical Superintendent, Dr. Micheal Arthur highlighted further essential medical equipment, including mattresses, anaesthesia machines, and monitors, which remain scarce.

Additionally, Dr. Arthur called on the assembly to take action against unauthorized kiosks and containers encroaching on the hospital’s surroundings.

He noted that these structures not only compromise the aesthetic appeal of the facility but also obstruct visibility, posing potential security risks.
