Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have voted to reject three of the 56 constitutional amendment proposals presented at the party’s 2025 National Annual Delegates Conference held at the University of Ghana Stadium.

The proposals, which aimed to alter key aspects of the party’s internal structure and leadership eligibility, were struck down during intense deliberations attended by over 6000 delegates from across the country.

Chairman of the Planning Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu, confirmed the outcome while speaking to Happy FM during it’s live broadcast at the UG Sports Stadium, noting that the rejected amendments failed to gain the required support despite weeks of consultation and debate.

“The democratic process has spoken. Delegates engaged the motions with seriousness, and their decisions reflect the grassroots voice of our party,” he said.

The widely debated and rejected proposals were motions 16, 17 and 54 of the 56 presented to delegates.

According to Ofoase Ayirebi MP and member of the Constitutional Review Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, the three failed proposals were among the most debated during the months-long harmonization process that condensed over 300 proposals into 56 unified motions.

Motion 16 sort to allow regional and constituency Executive commettees to scrutinize statements of accounts before presentation at the Delegates Conference.

Motion 17 which was also rejected, was to provide regional executive committees to appoint more persons to supervise electoral area elections.

The issue of youth representation proved contentious as motion 54 was rejected by delegates. The party sought to amend article 15.(4) of it’s constitution to define “youth” as those not above age 35 in line with international conversations.

“We ensured that every proposal was considered. But in the end, the delegates have the final say, and we respect that,” he said.

Despite the setback, party leadership hailed the overall process as a significant step in the NPP’s internal renewal following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The conference, held under the theme “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” has been widely seen as the starting point for the NPP’s repositioning as a strong opposition force under the new Mahama-led administration.

The conference continues with final speeches and post-election strategy sessions scheduled for Sunday.
