The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe and 2nd Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has denied claims attributed to him in a viral online publication suggesting he threatened to “sell his seat” if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is elected as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a press statement dated Monday, July 21, Mr. Shaib described the publication, which appeared on opr.news, as false, malicious, and clearly intended to mislead the public and sow division within the NPP.

The headline in question read: “I Dare My NPP—I’ll Sell My Seat If Bawumia Is Mistakenly Elected as Flagbearer.” According to the MP, he has never granted any formal or informal interview making such remarks, and insists the story is a “reckless piece of fabrication.”

“This is a blatant case of irresponsible journalism and the spread of fake news,” he stated, urging the public to disregard the publication and treat it with the “utter contempt it deserves.”

Jerry Ahmed Shaib noted that the media outlet failed to provide any specifics regarding the alleged interview such as the date, time, or platform further confirming the fictitious nature of the report. He also described the article as defamatory and damaging to his hard-earned reputation.

The MP is demanding an immediate halt to the circulation of the story, a full retraction, and a public apology from the publishers.

He warned that failure to comply would compel him to take legal action to defend his name and the dignity of his office.
