The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed that government has cleared all outstanding arrears of Capitation Grant owed to public basic schools, covering the period from 2023 to date.
In an official statement, Daniel Fenyii, Head of Public Relations at GES, commended both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance for prioritizing the payments despite the country’s economic constraints.
“This gesture reflects the government’s strong resolve and practical support for basic education,” the statement read. “We also acknowledge and commend our hardworking school heads who managed to maintain classroom operations throughout the delay.”
Capitation Grant is a vital funding mechanism that empowers public basic schools to acquire essential teaching and learning materials, conduct minor infrastructure maintenance, and promote local school management autonomy.
GES emphasized that all school leaders must use the funds responsibly and in accordance with grant guidelines. To this end, monitoring teams at the regional and district levels will intensify supervision to ensure compliance, transparency, and value-for-money usage.
The service reiterated that strict adherence to accountability protocols is expected from heads of schools to ensure equitable distribution of resources and improved learning outcomes across the country.
