The Eastern Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Patrick Boison, has called on the government to urgently review the single spine salary structure, which has remained unchanged since its implementation nearly 15 years ago.

Speaking at GNAT’s 7th Regional Delegates Conference held at Kibi Presbyterian College of Education in the Abuakwa South Municipality, Mr. Boison also expressed concern over the government’s delay in fulfilling key promises to teachers.

He cited the unfulfilled deprived area allowance for teachers serving in remote communities as a major disappointment, describing their dedication as unmatched and deserving of better recognition.

Mr. Boison also lamented the delays in the release of capitation grants and subsidies needed for the smooth running of pre-tertiary schools, as well as limited funding for GNAT directorates and School Improvement Support Officers (SISOs), which he said hampers educational outcomes.

“Teachers play a critical role in nation-building by shaping the lives of young learners into future leaders. It is only fair that they receive the respect and compensation they deserve,” he stressed.

The conference, themed “Educating an African Fit for the 21st Century: The Role of Policy Makers and Unions in Ghana”, served as a platform for stakeholders to reflect on progress and chart a path forward.

Mr. Boison reminded delegates that the quadrennial event is not only for policy review but also an opportunity to re-center the union’s focus on its members and their welfare.
