Soldiers attached to Akroma Mining Company have clashed with angry youth of Wisiwisi in the Kwahu West Municipality over alleged illegal mining activities.
The military officers, numbering about 20, stormed the community and physically assaulted several residents who were protesting the company’s operations. The youth accuse the mining firm of destroying farmlands and polluting local water bodies through illegal mining.
In the heat of the confrontation, the soldiers seized mobile phones and cameras belonging to journalists who were covering the demonstration.
Eyewitnesses say the officers are still at the scene, using brute force on anyone who attempts to record or speak out. The community is calling for urgent intervention.
