Z-9 Military Helicopter Crash: Too early for investigation, says LPG General Secretary

The General Secretary of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Jerry Owusu, says it is premature to demand an investigation into the recent military helicopter crash, urging the nation to prioritize mourning the victims.

Speaking in an interview on EPA HO DABEN with Bismark Brown on Happy 98.9 FM, Owusu said calls for a probe should be postponed out of respect for those who lost their lives.

“It’s too early to call for an investigation; right now, this is painful. Let’s just mourn,” he stated.

The Z-9 military helicopter crash claimed the lives of eight individuals, including senior government officials and military personnel:

Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah

Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed

Former Agriculture Minister Alhaji Muniru Mohammed

NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong

Four crew members of the Ghana Armed Forces

In response, President John Mahama has ordered national flags to fly at half-mast, as tributes pour in from all sides of the political spectrum.

Former President Nana Akufo‑Addo described the tragedy as a “national disaster,” while Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia called it “heart-wrenching.”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for a “thorough, transparent, and swift investigation” into the cause of the crash.

However, Jerry Owusu’s remarks reflect a more emotive stance, urging a focus on collective grief and national unity before turning to procedural matters.

“There will be time for answers. But now, we must honor the dead and comfort the bereaved,” he added.
