Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is earning widespread praise from Ghanaians for demonstrating qualities reminiscent of the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills, affectionately known as Asomdwehene, the King of Peace.

On Saturday, August 9, Dr Bawumia visited President John Dramani Mahama to personally console him following the military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives. The gesture has been hailed as a powerful act of unity and statesmanship, mirroring the calm, non-divisive leadership style that defined Atta Mills’ presidency.

Political commentators, civil society actors, and ordinary citizens have lauded Dr Bawumia for maintaining a measured, considerate political posture even amid partisan divides. Atta Mills was renowned for avoiding inflammatory rhetoric, instead focusing on consensus-building and national cohesion values many see reflected in Bawumia’s recent actions.

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, in a heartfelt social media post, described both Mahama and Bawumia as “amongst the finest politicians in the whole world,” praising their ability to set shining examples during moments of national grief. He contrasted their conduct with leaders elsewhere who are mired in “pointless tussles” that deepen division, adding that Ghana is blessed to have “temperate, considerate, calm-mannered, yet capable men” at the helm.

For many Ghanaians, Bawumia’s gesture is more than symbolic — it is a reminder that real progress stems not from political point-scoring, but from mutual respect, peace, and collaboration in the face of shared challenges.
