The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has called for restraint and accuracy in media coverage following the devastating crash of a Z-9 military helicopter in the Ashanti Region, which claimed the lives of all eight personnel on board.

In a statement issued by Captain VA Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, the GAF expressed concern over the surge in speculative and unverified reports circulating online and in traditional media.

“For the sake of the bereaved families and loved ones, the Armed Forces urge media practitioners, panelists, social commentators, bloggers, and content creators to be circumspect in their reportage as a way of according respect to the memories of the fallen heroes and to mitigate the sorrows of the bereaved families” the statement said.

The GAF emphasized that a full investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash, and that conclusions drawn from opinion or conjecture are premature.

“At this point in time, any purported conclusions based on opinion, perceptions, and conjectures will be premature and misleading. The public is therefore advised to be wary of such reportage,” the statement contained.

The Armed Forces also pledged to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth, including working with international aviation experts if necessary.

“We understand the strong public interest in this tragedy and assure the nation that thorough investigations have commenced. We will pursue every avenue to bring clarity and closure.”

The GAF expressed gratitude to the government, institutions, and individuals who have shown support since the crash. It also extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, describing them as patriots whose sacrifices will not be forgotten.

“May the souls of our patriots continue to rest in peace”.
