The Accra Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into violent clashes that marred the climax of the Homowo Festival at Anyaa and Sowutuom on Saturday, August 30, 2025, leaving three people dead and four injured.

According to a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the violence erupted during the traditional sprinkling of Kpokpoi after a misunderstanding between supporters of two rival chiefs escalated into gunfire.

“The incident threw the celebration into chaos,” the statement said, adding that further attacks occurred at nearby Olebu as some attendees tried to leave the grounds.

The deceased have been identified as Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah, also known as Nii Kwashiebu; Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan; and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The injured Enoch Amevor (treated and discharged), Samuel Adjei, Nathaniel Doku, and Frederick Lartey, also known as Nii Obrafour are receiving treatment at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital.

Police have deployed additional officers to restore calm and launched intelligence-led operations to track down all those involved.

“We urge traditional leaders and their supporters to strictly adhere to agreed security arrangements to prevent further disturbances”.
