President John Dramani Mahama has called on political leaders to rise above partisanship and impunity, emphasizing the need to safeguard Ghana’s democracy through strong institutions and accountable governance.

Speaking at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, September 2, during the launch of the 2025 Democracy Cup, Mahama stated, “Democracy is not merely about elections, it’s about accountability, inclusion, fairness, and justice.”

He added, “We must resist the temptation of partisanship, authoritarianism and impunity. Our duty is to govern with humility and place the interest of the people above all else.”

The remarks come just a day after President Mahama removed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office, following a committee’s recommendation based on a petition citing misbehavior.

The timing of the speech has drawn attention, with a section of the public questioning the constitutionality of the removal.

However, President Mahama maintained that democracy requires vigilance and respect for institutional processes.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, who led the delegation to present the Democracy Cup, announced that proceeds from the tournament will fund FIFA-certified training for physical education teachers in Senior High Schools nationwide.
