Bernard Bediako of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is poised for victory in the Akwatia by-election, according to provisional results from the Electoral Commission.

With tallies from most of the 119 polling stations counted, Bediako holds a commanding lead over Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Liberal Progressive Party (LPP) trails significantly behind.

“This is a reflection of the hard work we’ve put in,” Bediako told reporters at the NDC’s collation centre. “The people of Akwatia have spoken, and we are grateful.”

The by-election was triggered by the death of sitting MP Ernest Kumi earlier this year.

Given Akwatia’s status as a swing seat, both parties mounted aggressive campaigns, viewing the contest as a bellwether ahead of the 2028 general elections.

NDC supporters gathered at key locations across the constituency, waving flags and chanting slogans.

However, party leaders urged restraint.

“We are confident, but we must wait for the official declaration,” said NDC Eastern Regional Secretary, Mavis Ofori. “Let’s remain calm and respectful of the process.”
