The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit at the Ridge Hospital has raised concern over shortage of beds and staff at the facility, forcing some patients to sit in chairs for extended periods due to overcrowding.

During a visit by Parliament’s Health Committee, Head of the Unit, Dr. Martin Owusu Boamah, made an urgent appeal for support.

“It is not best for pregnant women to sit on chairs… sometimes you tell them to look for other facilities, and they don’t want to go,” he said, describing the situation as dire.

Director of Medical Services, Dr. Leslie Adams Zakaria also highlighted the lack of staff accommodation, stressing its impact on healthcare delivery.

“Accommodation is a major issue for staff in general,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Dr. Reuben Ngissah, Head of Surgery, called for legislative reforms to enable hospitals to better support financially vulnerable patients.

“Some of the laws may have to be amended… it’s very unfortunate, but that is the reality on the ground,” he stated.

The hospital’s management has called on government for a swift intervention to improve conditions and ensure safe, dignified care for patients and staff alike.
