At least 14 individuals including students, teachers, and invigilators have been arrested nationwide for their involvement in examination malpractices in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The arrests occurred at Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College in Asante Bekwai, Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS, and other centres across the country.

John Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), confirmed the developments.

“The number of arrests continues to rise. The results of candidates from all affected schools will be subjected to strict scrutiny,”.

WAEC has shut down the Adventist Day Senior High School centre in Kumasi after multiple mobile phones were seized.

He added that, candidates have been relocated to the WAEC regional office to continue their exams under tighter supervision.

Among the cases cited:

Two impersonators in Kasoa were sentenced to six months in prison; their accomplice received eight months.

The proprietor of Christian School in Kukurantumi and a teacher were arrested for operating a WhatsApp group to share exam questions.

In Abura Dunkwa, one Ebenazer Fynn was arrested for impersonation and is under investigation.

Kapi emphasized WAEC’s commitment to upholding exam integrity.

“We will not hesitate to take stringent measures against malpractice.”
