The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over what it describes as his failure to tackle the illegal mining menace, popularly known as galamsey.

In a statement shared on the Party’s official Facebook page on Thursday, September 11, 2025, the NPP General Secretary, Lawyer Justin Frimpong Kodua (JFK), alleged that President Mahama has “failed woefully” in the fight against galamsey.

He argued that the President cannot deal with the issue because members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) are “deeply involved” in the practice.

“President Mahama has failed woefully in the fight against illegal mining. He can’t fight galamsey because his party members are deeply involved in it. He must be bold enough to apologise to Ghanaians and discipline his party members who are blatantly and recklessly doing galamsey instead of shifting blame onto the security agencies. Empty rhetorics cannot salvage the situation. The facts are clear,” Kodua stated.

The NPP urged President Mahama to show leadership by taking decisive action against party members allegedly involved in illegal mining instead of deflecting blame.
