The New Patriotic Party (NPP) General Secretary hopeful, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of failing to deliver on its campaign promise to end illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

In an interview, Mr. Antwi said the NDC used the galamsey debate to discredit the Nana Addo-led NPP administration ahead of the 2024 elections, portraying the government as hostile to small-scale miners.

According to him, this campaign message cost the NPP significant votes in mining communities.

He noted that many Ghanaians expected President John Dramani Mahama to take swift action against galamsey after returning to power, but the situation has instead worsened.

He criticized the President for refusing to declare a state of emergency on the menace, despite pushing former President Akufo-Addo to do so while in opposition.

“The government must take urgent steps to halt galamsey, reclaim degraded lands and water bodies, and create sustainable jobs for the youth in mining areas,” he urged.
