The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared Professor Alidu Mahama Seidu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the Member of Parliament-elect for Tamale Central, after he emerged the sole candidate in the constituency’s by-election.

According to the Returning Officer, Muniru Musah, the declaration was made in line with Constitutional Instrument (CI) 127, which mandates the EC to pronounce an unopposed candidate duly elected.

The by-election was triggered by the passing of Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who died in a helicopter crash in August.

Initially, Prof. Seidu faced competition from the People’s National Convention (PNC) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG). However, both candidates later withdrew from the race. The EC subsequently reopened nominations for 10 days, but no new aspirants came forward. With the window closed and no challenger in sight, the NDC candidate was officially declared winner without a vote being cast.

Reacting to the announcement, the NDC’s Deputy Regional Secretary, Ziblim Saaka, thanked constituents for their support and assured them of development-oriented and inclusive leadership.

He emphasized that Prof. Seidu is committed to fulfilling his promises and advancing progress in Tamale Central.

The MP-elect is expected to be sworn into Parliament in the coming days to begin his duties.
