For many smallholder farmers in Ghana, preparing land for planting remains one of the most difficult hurdles in the farming cycle. With limited access to tractors and tilling equipment, farmers are often forced to queue for the few available services. This results in late land preparation, delayed planting, and ultimately, low yields.

King Tractor, a KIC supported agritech business, is addressing this challenge head-on by providing timely and affordable tractor services to farmers across rural communities.

The demand for tractor services far exceeds supply in most farming communities. King Tractor’s innovation is a locally assembled tractor that ensures that farmers can access mechanized land preparation without waiting for weeks. By leveraging technology and deploying tractors strategically, the business helps smallholder farmers prepare their fields at the right time for planting, boosting productivity and yields.

Impact on Smallholder Farmers

King Tractor joined the KIC AgriTech Challenge program and emerged as part of the winners that progressed unto the Business Incubation Program. King Tractor’s business model has not only reduced the pressure on limited tractor services but also ensured that farmers plant on time, a key determinant for good harvests.

Building the future of mechanized farming

With support from KIC and the Mastercard Foundation, King Tractor is innovating in the mechanization space to make farming more efficient, profitable, and attractive to the youth. The business envisions a future where no farmer must abandon or delay planting due to lack of tractor access.

“We understand the struggles farmers go through when they have to wait endlessly for tractor services. At King Tractor, our mission is simple — to put an end to late tilling and help farmers achieve higher yields through timely, affordable, and accessible mechanization,” said Eric Kuupole,
Co-Founder, King Tractor.

Speaking on the impact of King Tractor, Benjamin Gyan-Kesse, Executive Director of KIC, emphasized the organization’s role in building scalable agribusinesses that solve real challenges for farmers: “Mechanization is one of the biggest gaps in Ghana’s agricultural value chain. At KIC, we are proud to support innovative startups like King Tractor that are not only addressing this challenge but also creating opportunities for youth and smallholder farmers to thrive. When our entrepreneurs succeed, our food systems become stronger and more resilient.”
