President John Dramani Mahama has extended an invitation to leading Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Ghana to participate in a high-level engagement on illegal mining, scheduled to take place at Jubilee House on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 12:00 noon.

In a statement signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, the meeting is aimed at providing a platform for frank and constructive dialogue between government and civil society on tackling the menace of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The engagement seeks to harness the collective expertise, perspectives, and solutions of CSOs to address the persistent environmental, social, and economic challenges posed by illegal mining across the country.

Among the organisations invited are the Catholic Bishops Conference Ghana, Christian Council of Ghana, Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Office of the Chief Imam, Ghana Muslim Mission, Arocha Ghana, IMANI Ghana, Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), and the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD).

Other key stakeholders include the Ghana Bar Association, Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, Africa Centre for Energy Policy, Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC), WACAM Ghana, National Resource Governance Institute, ActionAid International, Amnesty International, and the Ghana Federation for the Disabled.

The wide range of participating groups reflects the government’s intention to adopt a multi-sectoral approach in dealing with illegal mining, which has long been identified as a threat to Ghana’s environment, water resources, and sustainable development.

President Mahama, through the Secretary to the President, assured participants of government’s commitment to an open and collaborative process in finding lasting solutions to this national challenge.
