The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives is staging a nationwide protest today to demand the payment of salary arrears spanning nine to ten months. The group, comprising over 7,000 nurses and midwives who were recruited through official government channels, says they have been working without pay for nearly a year.
Speaking to the media, some of the protesters highlighted the dire financial hardships they face. “We advise our patients to eat three times a day, yet we can barely afford to eat once,” one nurse said. “We are simply asking the government to pay us what we are owed so we can meet our basic needs and take care of our families.”
The Coalition is calling on the government to address their concerns and fulfill its obligations to healthcare workers who continue to serve the public despite the lack of remuneration.
