The Municipal Chief Executive of Effutu, Rev. Attah Mensah, has issued a strong warning to individuals engaged in illegal mining known locally as galamsey urging them to stop immediately due to its severe impact on water resources in the Central Region.

Speaking to the media about the ongoing Winneba water crisis, Rev. Mensah emphasized that galamsey activities have polluted vital water bodies, making it difficult for residents to access clean drinking water.

He stressed that the government is working to create more employment opportunities for the youth, and therefore illegal mining is both unnecessary and destructive.

“If galamsey does not stop now, the government may be forced to deploy military intervention to protect our water sources,” he warned.

To address the crisis, Rev. Mensah announced plans to drill five boreholes in selected communities within the Effutu Municipality.

He also expressed appreciation to Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and the Central Regional Minister for donating water storage tanks to neighboring districts also affected by the water shortage.
