The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that Cabinet has approved the formal absorption of 6,200 teachers who have been working for several months without pay.

The announcement was made during a press briefing in Accra earlier today.

According to the Minister, government has earmarked approximately ₵1.1 billion to support the absorption process, which also covers a category of health workers facing similar challenges. The funds will be used to issue staff IDs and clear salary arrears owed to the affected teachers.

“These teachers have shown remarkable discipline and commitment by continuing to work without disrupting academic activities,”

“Cabinet has recognized their sacrifice, and I can confirm that they will receive full back pay.”

He disclosed that the Ministry of Finance has been authorized to make the necessary budgetary provisions to commence payments soon.

The Minister also appealed for patience from the teachers, assuring them of the government’s firm commitment to resolving their concerns.

In a symbolic remark, Mr. Iddrisu commended the teachers’ resilience, saying,

“I haven’t demonstrated and pelt their stones, but I told them they must pay for their stones. We’ll give them back pay not as a favor, but because they earned it by not disrupting academic work.”

He urged teachers to end picketing and protests, stressing that the government’s latest decision is clear proof of its commitment to the welfare of public sector workers.
