"Abolish Council of State" - Interim General Secretary of United Party admonishes

Yaw Baubeng Asamoah

The Interim General Secretary of the United Party, Yaw Baubeng Asamoah, has suggested axing the Council of State, a constitutional body that advises the president on matters of national interest, saying it has not been entirely useful. According to the former legislator for Adentan Constituency, Ghana’s current governance structure is very discriminatory.

Speaking at the official launch of the United Party in Accra, the legal luminary reiterated the need for change. He revealed the United Party has officially submitted a memorandum to the Constitutional Review Committee suggesting the creation of a second chamber of parliament that comprises representatives from all walks of life including farmers, teachers, civil society groups, religious leaders, etc. The philosophy, he argues, is to make Ghana’s democracy and governance more inclusive.

His argument re-echoed sentiments shared by the party’s Interim Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Boniface, of how the current system of governance tends to exclude, in most instances the brightest minds. This exclusion the United party believes is derailing the development of Ghana.

Mr. Buaben Asamoah has admonished Ghanaians to demand for changes that will ensure Ghana’s democracy is more participatory.
