Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Declares Intent to Contest NPP General Secretary Position

The former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has officially announced her intention to contest for the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the party’s next internal elections.

In a statement shared on her Facebook page to mark her birthday, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful called on party faithful to rally behind her as she seeks to help reorganise, rebuild, and restore unity within the NPP following the party’s recent internal challenges.

Reflecting on the NPP’s current state, the former Ablekuma West MP acknowledged that the party had gone through a stormy face-off which left it “bruised” and “battered,” but expressed confidence in the party’s resilience and ability to bounce back.

“Scathed, we refuse to be burnt, and in the unlikely circumstance that we set ourselves in a blazing inferno, enduring the ultimate sacrifice for the New Patriotic Party, we will rise,” she stated.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), describing it as a caretaker government that lied its way into power and failed to deliver on its promises.

She emphasised the need for the NPP to restore public confidence and unity at all levels of the party from polling stations to the national executive in order to reclaim power.

“This caretaker NDC government is there not because they are preferred; they are there because they lied their way into government, amidst lofty promises, and caused belief in us to wane. But we will revive it,” she stated.

Declaring her readiness to lead the NPP’s restructuring efforts, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful said she was nurtured, proven, and prepared to serve as General Secretary and join in the collective journey to rescue our beloved country from this clueless, insensitive, and glaringly incompetent government.

She urged members of the NPP, both in Ghana and abroad, to unite and work together toward victory in the December 2028 general elections, pledging her commitment to the party’s ultimate goal of returning to power.

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful’s declaration adds a major contender to what is expected to be a keenly contested race for the NPP’s top administrative position as the party prepares to reorganise ahead of the 2028 elections.
