The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 32-year-old man, Akoto Nelson, for posing as a police officer during a musical concert held at the Black Star Square in Accra.

In a statement from the Police, the suspect was apprehended on Sunday, October 19, 2025, by officers from the National Operations Directorate (NOD) Surveillance Unit who were deployed to provide security at the event.

Police said the suspect, dressed in a police uniform with the rank insignia of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was spotted behaving suspiciously. Upon questioning, he admitted he was not a member of the Ghana Police Service.

Investigations revealed that Akoto had impersonated a police officer in an attempt to gain free entry to the event, claiming he did not have money to pay the gate fee.

He further disclosed that the uniform belonged to a deceased Chief Inspector identified as Gyasi, from whom he obtained the police accoutrements in 2022.

A search conducted at his residence in Taifa-Ashaiman led to the discovery of several items, including a toy P99 pistol, pepper spray, two ZTE mini handsets, a pepper spray pouch, a ZTE charger, a Xinfa cutter knife, complimentary cards, a voter ID bearing the name “Akoto Nelson Elikem,” and a birth certificate in the name of “Nelson Akoto.”

The Police further indicated that the suspect works as a security guard and messenger at a private company. He is currently in custody and will be arraigned before court to face charges.

The Police Service has reiterated its commitment to maintaining public safety and urged citizens to report suspicious persons impersonating security personnel.
