The Minority Caucus in Parliament is calling for immediate government intervention to improve safety on the Volta Lake, following a tragic boat accident near Kete Krachi on October 11, 2025, that claimed 15 lives.

In a statement signed by Kennedy Nyarko Osei, Ranking Member of the Roads and Transportation Committee, the Caucus extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and condemned the recurring incidents on the lake as unacceptable.

The statement recalled that in 2020, the government secured a $150 million loan from the Korean Exim Bank for the Volta Lake Transport Limited project, which was intended to install modern inland water transport infrastructure, including floating pontoons. The Minority pointed out that feasibility studies conducted by Vision Consult had been completed, providing a clear implementation roadmap.

They urged the government to prioritize the project and expedite the release of the funds to prevent further tragedies.

Additionally, the Caucus called on the Ghana Maritime Authority to strictly enforce vessel registration and loading regulations to address persistent issues of overloading.

Highlighting the importance of the Volta Lake, which serves as a crucial transport route for nearly two million Ghanaians, the Minority stressed the need to make the lake safe and reliable for all users.
