The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin, has declared that despite the New Patriotic Party (NPP) holding 87 seats in Parliament, the Minority will hold the government’s super majority accountable through substance and principle rather than numbers.

Speaking in Parliament as sittings resumed on Tuesday, October 21, Afenyo-Markin urged the government to take swift and decisive action to resolve pressing national challenges, including the persistent issue of illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey.

“We don’t believe in numbers; we believe in substance. We will confront you with substance,” he emphasized.

He further criticized the recent removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, describing the process as lacking transparency and calling for the protection of state institutions from political interference.

“The removal of the Chief Justice lacked transparency. Ghana’s institutions must be protected from political manipulation,” he stated.

Court documents indicate that an order of certiorari has been filed to bring before the court, for the purpose of being quashed, all three reasons cited by the Pwamang Committee in recommending Justice Torkornoo’s removal. The same order seeks to nullify the Presidential Warrant dated September 1, 2025, which effected her removal from office as Chief Justice and Justice of the Supreme Court.

According to an official statement issued by the Minister of Government Communications on Monday, September 1, President John Dramani Mahama removed Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo from office in line with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution.
