A resident of Weija-Gbawe, Charles Osei Asibey, has voiced concern over the recurring challenges faced by the community whenever the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) opens the Weija Dam for spillage.
Speaking on the Happy Morning Show with Kwadwo Sefah-Danquah, Mr. Asibey explained that the overflowing water often inundates parts of Weija and nearby areas, leaving residents distressed and property damaged.
He further alleged that some local assembly officials demand money from residents before clearing blocked drains to allow floodwaters to flow freely.
“We have only one passage for the water, so when it gets blocked, the water cannot move. We are then forced to pay before they come and open the drain for us,” Mr. Asibey said.
According to him, the only existing drainage channel is frequently choked with refuse, worsening the flooding situation during dam spillage.
Mr. Asibey appealed to the government to intervene and provide a sustainable solution to the recurring problem, stressing that the situation intensifies with each spillage from the dam.
