The Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe in the Greater Accra Region, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has raised serious concerns over the declining state of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), stating that it is no longer delivering its intended purpose.
He noted that patients nationwide are increasingly being forced to pay out of pocket for medical care a development he described as a worrying return to the cash and carry system the NHIS was established to eliminate.
Contributing to a debate on the floor of Parliament, Mr. Shaib lamented that even pregnant women undergoing Caesarean Sections (CS) are being charged between ₵5,000 and ₵9,000, a situation he described as unacceptable.
He urged government to take swift action to restore the effectiveness and credibility of the NHIS to ensure that Ghanaians, particularly vulnerable groups, can access quality healthcare without financial difficulty.
