The Head of the University of Ghana Archives, Mrs. Judith Opoku Boateng has called for the need to revitalize Ghana’s film culture.

Speaking with Kwadwo Sefah Danquah on the Happy Morning Show, the University Archivist said, “Ghana we don’t have film heritage. Ghana has lost its film heritage. We’ve adopted a foreign film culture, where we predominantly showcase and purchase films from abroad, rather than prioritizing our own Ghanaian films.”

“We’ve sold off most of our films to foreign entities, and now we’re left with little knowledge of our own film culture. The focus on economics gains led us to overlook the importance of preserving our heritage,’’ she added.

She explained that only a few remnants of Ghana’s film heritage remain. The Archivist said, “When it comes to classic films, such as 16- millimetre or 35- millimetre films, most of Ghana’s collection is gone. What’s left are formats like VHS and other modern technologies.”

She emphasized that the country’s film culture has been overshadowed by foreign films, stating, “Unless we’re screening foreign movies, our film culture is virtually non- existence.’’

She called for a revival of Ghana’s film culture and stressed the need to sustain and preserve the country’s audiovisual heritage for future generations.
