Roman Ridge Building Collapse: 14 Construction Workers Rescued

Emergency responders have rescued fourteen construction workers who were trapped after a three-storey building under construction collapsed near the Roman Ridge Engineering Centre in Accra on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred at a site reportedly managed by Fabrico Builders, situated between a 10-storey high-rise apartment complex and the Ghana Institute of Engineering at Roman Ridge.

According to eyewitnesses, the structure came down suddenly while masons and laborers were working on the upper floors. The collapse sent debris and dust flying, triggering panic among nearby residents and workers in adjoining buildings.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and Ghana Police Service rushed to the scene to carry out rescue operations. The injured workers were pulled from the rubble and rushed to the 37 Military Hospital and Ridge Hospital for treatment.

Officials at the scene confirmed that all fourteen victims were in critical condition but receiving medical attention. Rescue teams continued to search through the debris late into the evening to ensure no one was left trapped.

The cause of the collapse is not yet known, but preliminary reports suggest possible structural weaknesses and poor construction practices. Engineers from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and Ghana Institute of Engineering have begun investigations to determine whether building regulations were breached.

Residents in the area have expressed concern over the growing number of unsafe construction projects in the capital and called on city authorities to intensify supervision and enforcement of safety standards.

As of press time, officials from Fabrico Builders had not issued any public statement on the incident.
