Manhyia Palace postpones ‘Great Oath’ hearing involving Daddy Lumba’s Sister

The Manhyia Palace has postponed the hearing of a case involving a relative of the late highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, after the Great Oath of the Asantehene was invoked.

The postponement follows an incident on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, when Daddy Lumba’s sister, Ernestina Akosua Bimpomaa, invoked the Great Oath during a court session. The case, initiated by the musician’s first wife, Akosua Serwaa, seeks to establish who is legally recognized as the late musician’s spouse.

According to Asante customary law, cases involving the Great Oath fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Manhyia Palace and not the courts. Consequently, the family was summoned before the palace on Monday, November 3, 2025. However, the hearing was deferred due to a related court case still pending judgment.

In a related development, the Kumasi High Court has dismissed an injunction application filed by Akosua Serwaa to stop Daddy Lumba’s funeral rites. The court ruled that, under Asante tradition, control over the late musician’s remains lies with his extended family.

The legal process will now proceed to determine the rightful surviving spouse. Parties involved have been directed to submit all relevant legal documents by Friday, October 31. A Case Management Conference is scheduled for November 14, with the substantive hearing expected to commence on November 17 and a final judgment slated for November 25.
